His Excellency Mr. Fuwad Thowfeek
Ambassador Designate of the Republic of Maldives to Kingdom of Thailand
Mr. Fuwad Thowfeek is the Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives designated to the Kingdom of Thailand since 16 December 2024. He was the Ambassador-at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Maldives prior to his current position. He was the Chairman of the Elections Commission of Maldives from September 2021 to November 2024. He was also the Chairman of the first independent Elections Commission of the Maldives that was established in November 2009 to modernize the electoral system and develop a functioning multi-party system in the Maldives. He was a member of the interim Elections Commission that was established in September 2008.
He was involved in planning and management of all the national elections and public referendums during the period 2008-2014 and 2020-2024 which included the Presidential Elections in 2008, 2013 and 2023, Parliamentary Elections in 2009, 2014 and 2023, and Local Council Elections in 2011, 2014 and 2021.
He was earlier the Executive Director at the Ministry of Planning and National Development where he led the National Census Operations of 1977-1992 and 2000-2008, Socio-Economic Surveys and contributed immensely to all the Statistical publications of the Government during the period. 1992-1999, he worked as the Computer Programmer at the Secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Kathmandu, Nepal.
He as a Hubert Humphrey fellow, underwent a graduate study and professional development program at Boston University, U.S.A in 1990-1991. He holds a Diploma in Computer Data Systems from the International Statistical Programs Center, Washington DC, U.S.A in 1982-1983. He also studied at the Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta, India in 1976-1977 and at the Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific, Tokyo, Japan in 1980-1981.
