President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu became the 8th President of the Republic of Maldives on 17th November 2023. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from University of Leeds, UK and is also certified as a Project Management Professional by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in the US.

President Muizzu's career in public service began in March 1998, as a Construction and Public Works Planning Technician Trainee at the Ministry of Construction and Public Works. Over the years, he held some key positions in both the public and private sectors, as well as leadership positions in political parties.

During his tenure as the Minister of Housing and Infrastructure from February 2012 to November 2018, he oversaw some of the most significant housing and infrastructure developments in the Maldives’ including the construction of the tallest building, road networks, and major land reclamation projects. Projects like the Sinamalé Bridge, Dharumavantha Hospital, Hiya Flats, the Malé Ring Road, Industrial Village, and

the reclamation of Hulhumalé Phase II stand as testimony to his visionary leadership and service to the nation. He also transformed Malé City by setting up parks and public spaces, and he completed numerous land reclamation, harbor development, and water and sewerage projects across the atolls.

In May 2021, Dr. Muizzu became the first directly elected Mayor of Malé City, where he worked to create a greener and more livable environment. His engagement with citizens, house visits to understand their living conditions, and advocacy for decentralization and local empowerment earned him widespread support.

During his presidential campaign, President Muizzu promised to safeguard freedom, security, justice, and equality in the Maldives and pledged to uphold the values of Islam and patriotism to usher in a new era of development for the nation. In his first public address as President, he reaffirmed his commitment to his pledges.

 

 

Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef

Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef took office on 17 November, 2023. Prior to that, he served as the Member of Parliament for Fares Maathoda constituency for nine years. During his time in parliament, he was recognized for his dedicated service to his constituents.

His government service began in 2004 as Secretary at Hulhumalé Hospital. Over the years, he has held key positions at the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Human Rights, as well as the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. Beyond the public sector, he also worked in several private companies and lectured at the Family Court, educating the public on marriage and family relations.

Vice President Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef is well-known for his passion for sports and social development. He played an active role in the Football Association of Maldives (FAM), where he served as Senior Vice President. During his academic years, he was involved in both sports and literary activities.

He is an alumnus of Al-Azhar University in Egypt, where he earned a degree in Social Service and Community Development. He later received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom. Proficient in both English and Arabic, the Vice President has a well-rounded background in education and public service.

 

 

Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel

Dr. Abdulla Khaleel was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives on 30 September 2024, by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. Prior to the appointment, Minister Dr. Khaleel was serving as the Minister of Health of the Republic of

Maldives from 17 November 2023.

Minister Dr. Khaleel, was the former Member of Parliament for the Nilandhoo Constituency in North Nilandhe Atoll, elected in 2014. He was actively involved in representing the people of his constituency by taking a lead role in advocacy, as the Chair of the Economic Affairs Committee of the People’s Majlis. In addition, he worked as the Secretary General of the Progressive Party of Maldives from 16 October 2016 till August 2018.

Before he started his political career, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel held several posts in the public and private sector in Maldives. He started his career by working as an Assistant Teacher in Faafu Atoll Education Centre. Upon his return after completing Bachelor’s degree at International Islamic University of Malaysia, Dr. Khaleel worked at the Public Enterprises Monitoring and Evaluation Board from 2002 till 2004. After completing his Masters degree in Business Administration, he returned to serve at the same agency. In 2006,he served as the Atoll Chief of Alifu Alifu Atoll and Noonu Atoll until 2008. He was then appointed as the Secretary General of the Civil Service Commission of Maldives. During this time, he was also lecturing at two local colleges - MAPS College and Villa College.

Dr. Khaleel holds a PhD in Public Policy from University of Brunei Darussalam and continues to be engaged in community development. He has contributed to development initiatives that were brought to his native island of Faafu Nilandhoo and regularly conducts capacity building workshops for local institutions and civil society organizations.
